Types of grow lights

In case you didn’t know, there are several different types of grow lights depending on the technology, materials, and chemicals used to produce light. The most common ones include:

  • Fluorescent - mostly used for early vegetative phases of certain plants
  • HID (high-intensity discharge) - very powerful light often used in general purpose indoor cultivation
  • LED (light emitting diode) - the type that I’m going to focus on today, and the fastest-developing one

LED Grow Lights - What this article is about!

Now, what do you need to know about all these types?

First and foremost, it’s important to be aware that different types exist, and they have different capabilities.

Second, by identifying the kind that’s appropriate for your intentions you are going to narrow down your search.

However, no need to worry about the latter as I already narrowed the article down to LED lights only, as they have proven to be the most effective and popular options in the community of growers.

Benefits of LED lights

Having announced that this roundup will consist of only LED grow lights, let’s see what’s the reason, or reasons, behind this decision.

Brightness & Full Spectrum Coverage

LED lights are exceptionally bright and will provide the plants with sufficient light all throughout their life cycle.

Furthermore, a high-quality LED light can be adjusted to cover all levels of the visible spectrum (by a single flip of a button), which is crucial for plant development and budding. This fact alone is enough to get you on board why these lights cost much more than HID’s or Fluorescent lights.

Area Coverage & Low Temperature

Besides being bright, LED lights tend to spread out which means that you will need fewer lamps to cover a bigger area, especially when comparing them to the HID type. Furthermore, there’s the heat emission - LEDs emit significantly less heat while turned on, which is a blessing if you live in an area where summers tend to get hot. Simply said, you won’t need cooling systems for them, which means less energy consumed, less money spent. On the other hand, the low heat emission can be a problem if you’re living in a colder climate, so have this in mind when considering a 600Watt LED grow light.

Easy to operate & reach maximum results

A proper LED 600Watt light will come with a built-in timer and scheduling function which will ensure that you keep your weed in a cycle that you want. It is a known fact that the weed grows in size when in a vegetative stage when you keep it exposed to low-spectrum light for 18 hours a day and 6 hours in darkness.

On the other hand, weed develops buds in the flowering stage, and requires higher spectrum light, for 12 continuous hours, followed by 12 hours of darkness. With a programmable timer, you can rest assured that your lights are providing the perfect lighting environment for your plants. Finally, this brings you the possibility to impact the weed’s size and shape, and maximize the yields.

Energy efficiency

Best-LED-Grow-Lights

Probably the main reason why LED lights are so big now is their energy efficiency, which translates to lower electricity bills. This is crucial for anyone who wants to do “stealth” growing. This is achieved by combining a lot of individual LED chips that work as a single unit, each emitting a narrow light spectrum bandwidth. Simply said, LED lights will make growing less expensive.

Lifespan

LED lights last for a very long time, from 50.000 hours to 100.000 hours, based on the quality. This is far more continuous operation than what any of the other types can do. This lifespan covers several growing seasons at least, so you can rest assured that your plants will have continuous light throughout the season.

Ease of installation & maintenance

LED growing lights are quite easy to install, depending on the model you choose. A good LED light will arrive at your doorstep with mounting hooks and cables, making it easy to put into your growing tent or remove it after a prolonged session. Since these lights have a long lifespan and don’t require regular checkups or intensive maintenance, they are an excellent option for a conscious grower.

Warranty

Last but not least, most high-quality LED lamps that you buy will come with a manufacturer’s warranty which is a big deal in the world growing plants, especially when you consider the average price of these light sources.

How to pick the best grow lights for you?

choosing best LED grow light

Now that you’ve learned why LED is the way to go, it’s time to get specific. In the following section, we’re going to talk about the factors that you need to consider before buying your grow lights, so pay close attention when reading the following paragraphs!

Size of the growing area

The first thing that you need to think about is how big of an area do you need to cover with lights. So how do you determine this? Take a look below:

1 plant = 1 square foot =  35 watts,

2 plants = 2 square feet = 70 watts,

And so on, you get the math.

Fast forward to 600 W (the only wattage featured in this article), a lamp of this power can provide light for an incredible 20 feet or 20 individual marijuana plants.

For example, let’s stick with 20 plants and imagine that’s the number that you possess. You’ve got two choices here - either to buy several smaller lamps and spread them across the room or get a single powerful one.

I’d recommend the latter because it’s going to be much more simple to set it up and it’s probably going to cost you less money. Not to mention the hassle of maintaining several lamps instead of one.

Light spectrum

Like mentioned above, good LED lamps can emit a full spectrum of colors and these would be the best option for an educated grower interested in high yields. Why is this important? It is to ensure that your plants get all the wavelengths that they need - the more the merrier.

The ones that are absolutely necessary are the blue and red light, so if you can’t get a full-spectrum lamp, go for one that has these two colors.

It’s also critical to understand that plants need different lights in different phases of growth. Many manufacturers thought of this and included switches so that you can flick between two settings - for the vegetative and the flowering stage.

Also, be aware that there are LEDs that are made solely for one growing phase, so they will not be optimal for the entire lifecycle of the plants.

Speaking of the light spectrum, there’s a term PAR often mentioned in grower communities, to basically confuse newcomers. If you’ve engaged yourself in a grower community, you’ve probably heard it before. It refers to the Photosynthetically Active Radiation and involves the spectral range of solar radiation which plants can consume and synthesize into carbohydrates. When talking about this acronym, people usually refer to the question of “how much PAR is grow light emitting” or “amount of PAR a grow light provides” which is not that important. The amount of active radiation a plant can utilize the most ranges from 400nm to 700nm - which is basically from blue to red light.

If you’re a beginner, don’t wear yourself about it - there are many more aspects to consider, especially if you plan to grow weed - because it can synthesize carbohydrates from the even larger spread.

Budget and brand

When talking about budget and brands, know that a reputable brand will always cost more and that their products will usually be of more quality than their cheaper counterparts. So yes, when it comes to grow lamps, the hype is true in most cases.

First-time growers might want to start with a more affordable model simply to get the hang of the entire process. Of course, cheaper doesn’t mean complete garbage, but it just means that it won’t perform quite as well as the top-notch ones.

Once you’ve gained some experience (and funds), you can upgrade to a higher quality lamp and continue from where you left off. It will be fun to compare how your plants will react to LEDs of varying classes.

How do you know whether a grow light is good or not? Your best bet would be to check user reviews online and see what the people have to say. Furthermore, you can check out my detailed reviews below.

Top 10 grow lights 600 Watt on the market in 2019

After we’ve learned together what’s important for the best LED grow light at 600 Watt, together we need to inspect the currently popular products on the market and fare them against each other based on the criteria we mentioned above.

Let’s dive in!

1. MEIZHI reflector 600W LED grow light

Editor’s Pick - Perfect for Eco-Conscious Users

Leather 5000 Series Futon Mattresse

Buy on Amazon

Meizhi is a great competitor in the grow light realm, and thus their 600 Watt LED Grow Light deserves to be on my top ten list.

Before I start, let's sing some praaises to the Meizhi company - they are well deserved. It is not only highly reputed but also known to bring affordable high-end equipment to the plant growing scene.

Meizhi pays special attention to the environmental impact and safety of their product and, consequently, all of their led lights own an ETL certificate. The newly upgraded  is no exception.

Besides its light spreading efficiency has been improved, and it can now cover a 3×3 ft. area at 18’’ height while consuming 277W which makes it quite economical if we presume the light outputs real 600 Watt, which it actually does.

How many plants can it handle without too much dissipated light? Up to three.

It will provide them with the full-color spectrum and natural photosynthesis-boosting light. Speeding up the cell division, this light will enhance the growth of your plants as well. Veg and bloom switches allow for adjusting the spectrum to the harvesting stages of your plants while the daisy-chain function enables you to cover large areas with multiple grow lights with no trouble at all.

Pros:

  • Great price
  • The reflector design concentrates the entire beam on the target plants
  • Dual Veg and Flower switches
  • Daisy chain function
  • Effective ventilating fans
  • Full-color spectrum including the white light
  • Three-year local warranty and 30-day return policy

Cons:

  • Fans operate only when the Veg switch is on
  • Not waterproof

2. MARS HYDRO Pro II 600W LED Grow Light

Runner-Up Best Choice For Budget Indoor Grow

Leather 5000 Series Futon Mattresse

Buy on Amazon

If you’re looking for a solution for your small indoor grow, stop right there – the Mars Hydro Pro II fixture might just be the right choice for you.

The two words I want you to remember there are “small” and “indoor”.

Unless you’re up for buying a few of these grow light panels, and hooking them up using the daisy chain feature, you won’t be able to cover that big of an area, at all. And since it’s not waterproof, make sure you pick the right location, too.

The panel emits a highly-penetrable, full-spectrum 600 Watt light capable of providing the perfect conditions for your plant as it goes through its growth cycles. You’re looking at a seed-to-harvest fixture here!

I was worried about things getting heated, especially in small spaces, but as it turns out, the built-in fans are pretty good at their jobs and keep the panel cool to the touch without making too much noise in the process.

Be prepared to deal with a few annoyances if you opt for this model, though.

For example, the unit doesn’t have an On/Off switch, so you’ll have to resort to pulling the plug every time you want to turn off the light. Who in their right mind would leave out a feature as basic as that?

Pros:

  • Reflection cup design with exposed LED lights
  • Full spectrum, real 600W light
  • Built-in fans keep the housing cool to the touch
  • Relatively lightweight and compact
  • Covered with a three-year warranty

Cons:

  • It doesn’t have an On/Off switch, nor a timer

3. Lightimetunnel 600W LED Plant Grow Lights

 All-round decent, affordable option

Leather 5000 Series Futon Mattresse

Buy on Amazon

Here we have a company which provides all sorts of tech stuff and competes in multiple markets. Looking at that fact, it doesn’t seem like the quality & value for money will be on par with the other brands who focus on grow lights.

However, Lightimetunnel (a creative name, you’d agree) provides quite an interesting grow light.

First and foremost, they advertise a higher spectrum (up to 780 nm) and high-quality LEDs with 10W of power each. The light is colored yellow, in order to stimulate natural sunlight, which is good, but yes - it means no different spectrum modes.

Lightimetunnel solved this problem by adjusting the height of the light - from 11.8 inches up to 47.2 inches will stimulate different spectrum for the plants. This height setting process is easy to perform, due to the hanging installations provided. The heat system is average - the light emits some heat. The cooling system is not loud.

The light itself is very bright and has low dissipation zones, which means the light is quite focused on the plant. Energy consumption is a bit higher than the manufacturer advertises (150W0, but it’s not a big deal. For this low price, you also get a two-year warranty. This is a very good offer, if you ask me.

Pros:

  • Great value for the price
  • Strong light
  • Sturdy construction
  • Sun-like color with possible full spectrum
  • Cons:

  • No waterproofing
  • No switches for plant development stages - but it’s solved by adjusting the height
  • No timer
  • 4. King Plus 600W LED Grow Light

    Good for medium-sized growing areas

    Leather 5000 Series Futon Mattresse

    Buy on Amazon

King Plus is a relatively young but highly appreciated China-based LED light manufacturer that has a good reputation among indoor growers. The King Plus 600 Watt LED Grow Light is a valid proof that this reputation is well deserved.

It has an excellent quality and price ratio and is highly efficient, especially if you set it up in the space that is not too big. Depending on whether you use it in the Veg or Bloom phase, the light will be sufficient to cover either an area of 3 x 3.4 ft. or 2.4 x 2.7 ft. Translated into cannabis plants, that is maximum four stems.

The actual body dimensions are 12.2 x 8.26 x 2.36 inches, and the unit weighs approximately 6.6 pounds. As it supports the worldwide voltage of 85-265 volts, it will work all across the globe.

The educated growers of all nations and colors will be pleased to hear that this light offers the full spectrum in the perfect proportion. The heat dissipation system is excellent and the PAR readings satisfactory.

The lifespan of 50.000 hours might not be the best a 600 Watt led light can offer, but considering the price, it can be justified. As a consolation, the maximum power draw is only 120v, so there will be no jaw-dropping electric bills.

    Pros:

  • Affordable price tag
  • Power efficient
  • Two internal fans offer excellent heat dissipation
  • Full spectrum LED grow light
  • Daisy chaining feature for expanding grow area
  • Cons:

  • Not waterproof
  • No Veg and Bloom switches
  • There is no timer
  • Phlizon is a name that has been getting a lot of attention and for a good reason. Promoted and tested by a giant R&D team, Phlizon 600 Watt grow light earned itself a good reputation in the grower community. Its main assets are its sturdiness and durability, meaning that it’s made from quality materials. Let’s see what you get from this light.

The lamp utilizes Bridgelux/Epistar lights, both industry leaders, and on the inside, it’s got a Zener diode. In terms of connectivity, this model has a Daisy Chain feature, so it’s easy to attach connect it to other lamps.

Like most other lamps on this list, this one too can produce a full spectrum of light. However, the red color seems to be a bit predominant, so the light has a pinkish tint. A good addition to this product are the two switches for different stages of the plant’s growth. The overall strength of the light is quite high, but you can’t expect true 600 Watt light on this price tag.

The light doesn’t have a reflector, so its area of coverage is decreased. On the bright side, there’s a lesser chance of the lamp catching fire, so its fire hazard is very low. Furthermore, the cooling system is quite decent, without too much noise.

Last, Phlizon gives a 2-year warranty on their product which isn’t the best score of today but is still pretty decent. Along with this, there is a 30-day money back guarantee so this product is a safe buy.

    Pros:

    • Affordable
    • Pretty sturdy build
    • Daisy-chain connectivity
    • It includes a quite good cooling system
    • Full spectrum

    Cons:

  • Doesn’t have very broad coverage
  • Not real 600 Watt
  • No timer
  • Viparspectra is one of the most prominent companies in the grow light industry, and in this section, I’m taking a closer look at their UL 600 Watt model.

When it comes to design, this product contains 120 LED lights each with 5W of power. Their lamps are made by high-end companies like Epistar, so you don’t have to worry about the quality.

Speaking of light, the lamps emit an optimal full spectrum ranging from 440 to 740 nm. The reflector that’s included in the design improves PAR by reflecting light straight in the direction of the canopy and also helps to spread it more evenly. The light is quite strong, especially on bloom/flowering mode (blue is a bit weaker by my opinion).

In case you already have some lights in your grow room, you will love the Daisy Chain feature. It allows you to connect the lamp to another one and power it that way, instead of connecting it into an outlet.

Those who are concerned about safety should know that this product is fire resistant and it meets the UL94V-0 flame retardance standard. However, the lamp isn’t waterproof nor does it have a timer, so some folks might not like this.

The company offers a generous 3-year warranty on this product, which proves that they truly believe in what they sell and that you can rest assured that you’re buying the real deal. If you happen not to like it, you can get a full refund within 30 days of your purchase.

    Pros:

    • A full light spectrum
    • Excellent coverage
    • Fire resistant & cooled well
    • 3-year warranty
    • Well-known and reliable brand

    Cons:

    • Doesn’t have a timer
    • Weaker blue spectrum
    • Not waterproof

    7. BESTVA 600W LED Grow Light

     Best Power-Saving Option

    Leather 5000 Series Futon Mattresse

    Buy on Amazon

If you’re somewhat of a newbie and don’t have more than a few growth cycles under your belt, you might feel a bit overwhelmed with all these options, so let’s go back to basics for a moment.

Enter BESTVA, a grow light that’s rapidly gaining popularity among beginners who are looking to minimize their costs, and maximize their yields – and with good reason, too.

Their grow light panel employs a combination of ten different kinds of LED lamps, with a total of 60 dual-chip 10-watt units, which makes it highly efficient, and allows it to form a full spectrum of visible light.

As such, this panel can replace natural light at all stages of the plant’s growth cycle. More importantly, it’s a real power-saver – even though it’s a 600-watt grow light, it will only add about 125W to your electricity bill. Let’s be honest, though - the real power you get is not as high, more like ¾ of the advertised.

The BESTVA grow light isn’t known for its long lifespan, though, and you can expect some bulbs to dim out relatively quickly. Also, the fans can be a bit noisy, which isn’t a deal-breaker for me, but I figured it’s worth mentioning.

If you’re having some doubts about it, that’s perfectly understandable, but I’d say go for it – at this price, what do you have to lose?

    Pros:

    • Suitable for use throughout the entire growth cycle
    • Highly efficient 60-piece dual-chip LED setup
    • Effective cooling system
    • Power-saving and cost-effective
    • Comes with a three-year warranty

    Cons:

    • The fans are a bit too loud
    • The bulbs dim out relatively quickly
    • No timer
    • No waterproofing

    8. Growstar 600W LED Grow Light

    An affordable option for beginners

    Leather 5000 Series Futon Mattresse

    Buy on Amazon

Growstar comes as a relatively popular brand in the industry, and one which focuses on the grower community, and strives to provide quality products.

Their 600 Watt LED grow light is an interesting choice for the money-conscious grower, and at the first glimpse looks like a well-constructed product.

First and foremost, they boast of 10W light bulb setup, increasing the overall power of illumination. On paper, this looks like an improvement and should affect the performance.

In reality, I’m afraid this isn’t a significant upgrade or an advantage in power. Unfortunately, this grow light is more like 200W strong, not nearly as 600W.

The next feature that is prominent in Growstar’s specs sheet is 90-degree optical lens, which concentrates the rays of light this device emits. That means the spread is not very good, which implicates that if you’re having more than two weed plants you’ll have to buy an additional light from Growstar.

The light spectrum is OK - this grow light can cover both areas that you’ll need - PAR-approved. Furthermore, the power consumption is around 150W (not 120 like advertised), and you get a decent set of hanging equipment. On the other hand, there’s no timer or waterproofing. Still, this is acceptable in this price range.

To top it all, there’s two-year warranty offered - so its definitely worth the investment if you’re just starting out.

    Pros:

    • Decent light source for all cycles
    • Covers the entire spectrum
    • Sturdy build
    • Affordable

    Cons:

    • The light isn’t near 600 Watt of power
    • Flimsy bulbs & wiring

Roleadro is a big and well-received brand in this market, boasting dozens of products which received lots of praise online, so it’s only natural to include their 600 Watt light in today’s roundup.

This brand definitely showcases some experience, and don’t brag with full spectrum coverage, which was quite intriguing for me at the first glance. Even though it’s plastic, they’ve built the unit to be sturdy & durable, and packed 84 full-spectrum reflectors and 12 blue spectral reflectors to “form a reasonable spectrum”. Kudos for honesty & approaching the topic without huge bragging. In reality, though, these lights aren’t separated while the light is on, so no switching is possible.

The light itself is a budget pick although it performs quite good. I’m surprised by its strength - the dissipation of light is progressive, and the coverage is very good. On the other hand, the brand advertises the 60-degree reflector cup to increase the brightness level while not losing on dissipation - and this thing doing a fine job.

The consumption is around 160W, and the manufacturer has stated that the unit will last 50 thousand hours. That’s decent, but I’m yet to confirm this fact. The package includes the hanging system and you get a 12-month guarantee and 30-day money back guarantee.

    Pros:

    • Quite powerful
    • Focused lightning area is lit very well
    • Decent heat moderating
    • Amazingly cheap for what it offers

    Cons:

    • No waterproofing
    • No timer
    • No switch for light spectrum

Here we have another grow-light-oriented company, trying their best to answer the needs of modern weed growers and alike. Since we’re looking at this subject from a weed grower perspective, let’s see what their 600 Watt growing light has to offer.

Starting with the build quality & features, we have sixty 10W double-chip LEDs, packed in a solid casing. The double-chip refers to the inner circuitry of the bulb, which might seem as an improvement over the competition, but it’s just a double 5W configuration.

Setting the specs aside, we have a burning question - how does it perform?

The answer is - surprisingly good. The power this device emits definitely matches some higher-priced models, with a full spectrum & daisy-chaining possibility (where you don’t need to connect each light to the wall socket, but connect them together, and supply the power through one cable). Furthermore, it definitely feels stronger than some of the models on today’s list.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, though (no pun intended); there’s no waterproofing present, and no switch for the different plant development stage. Still for this price, it’s certainly a good option. The package includes a hanging setup cables & hooks, and a power cord (not the cord for daisy-chaining). Finally, you get the three-year warranty and 30-day money back guarantee.

    Pros:

    • Strength of the light
    • Full spectrum performance with the switch for different stages
    • Daisy-chain function
    • Quiet yet effective heat management
    • Amazing value for the money

    Cons:

    • No waterproofing
    • No spectrum zone switch

Best 600W Grow Lights - Frequently Asked Questions

    indoor grow lights at 600W

    Credit: 420magazine.com

Why is full spectrum LED important?

Full spectrum is optimal for the growth of plants because it mimics sunlight. To be clear, for a lamp to be called full spectrum it has to be able to emit ultraviolet and infrared light too.

How long should be the distance between the lights and the plants?

Although not the strongest, LED lights to pack quite a punch so unless you want to burn your plants, it’s important to adjust the distance between them and the lights correctly.

Since today we’re dealing with 600 W LEDs, the optimal distance from the top of the plant would be somewhere from 16 to 36 inches. If you go lower you might damage the plants and if you go higher they won’t get enough light.

Consult with other growers and see what gave them the best results. Feel free to tweak if you feel that it is necessary.

Can any LED light be used for growing?

Remarkably, the answer to this question is yes. The commercial light bulbs that people use in their homes work on the same principle as the grow lights, so they will provide the plants with what they need.

However, grow lights are specifically designed for this purpose so they will be easier to set-up and many of them can be adjusted according to the plant’s growing phase.

Which color (wavelength) is optimal for growing marijuana?

As I’ve mentioned before, different stages of the plant’s development will require lights of different colors. For example, blue light is the best for the vegetative stage while the blooming phase requires a combination of blue and red.

A lot of lamps come with built-in settings for every phase, so if you’re in doubt, try to find one of those.

    Conclusion & My Recommendation
